Lafayette's Gold - The Lost Brandywine Treasure

About the Marquis de Lafayette:

Marquis de Lafayette

Lafayette was only 19 yrs old when he came to America to join the Colonial cause, speaking no English.

Lafayette was a wealthy nobleman- yet he chose to leave the comforts of France and put his future at risk by joining in the American Revolution.

George Washington and Lafayette had an instant bond - some say a father/son relationship.

Lafayette fought bravely and was wounded at the Battle of the Brandywine, winning the respect and praise of both American and French countrymen.

Lafayette's support- both monetary and political- were instrumental in the Colonies winning the Revolutionary War.

After returning to France, he was imprisoned for 5 years during the French Revolution for being part of the aristocracy and head of the French National Guard who fired on protesting French civilians.

Independence Hall in Philadelphia received its name from Lafayette during his visit in 1824, when he wanted to see "that great hall of independence" where the Declaration was signed.

He insisted on being buried with the soil of two republics- dirt from Bunker Hill and from outside Paris.
